Angry Birds Movie Sequel To Launch In 2019

by Kimberley Wallace on May 22, 2017 at 02:54 PM

Last year, we were treated to an Angry Birds movie based off the popular video game franchise, with characters voiced by Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Maya Rudolph, and Sean Penn, to name a few. The film was a huge success, scoring $350 million worldwide at the box office. Today, Rovio announced a sequel is on the way, as it once again joins forces with Columbia Pictures.

Right now, Rovio is calling it Angry Birds Movie 2, and it's set to premiere on September 20, 2019 to coincide with the series' 10th anniversary. The film is being directed by Thurop Van Orman (The Marvelous Misadventures of FlapjackAdventure Time) and is being co-directed by John Rice (King of the Hill, Rick and Morty), who also worked as a lead storyboard artist on the first movie and directed the Angry Birds Hatchlings shorts. The screenplay is being written by Peter Ackerman, best known for his work on The Americans and Ice Age. Sony Pictures Imageworks will once again handle the animation.

More details should surface in time. The first movie, a prequel to the video game series, had a lot of comedic talent, so it will be interesting to see who comes back and what new talent signs on for the sequel.

We felt the first film was worth your time, as Kyle Hilliard says, "Red’s growth and his interactions with his new friends Chuck and Bomb is an arc worth watching, and the film's destructive climax is fun to watch."
