Overwatch Will Add Better Console Aiming Options In Upcoming Patch

by Suriel Vazquez on Apr 13, 2017 at 06:10 PM

Part of what makes Overwatch a great shooter is the way every player can tailor the game to their playstyle. Beyond choosing the character that best represents the way they approach shooters, players can change all kind of settings, such as the look of the cursor and whether Lúcio's two beats are set to a toggle or a hold of a button. And after an upcoming match, console players will also be able to better tune the game's aiming to their liking.

Overwatch lead engineer Tim Ford recently posted a response to players asking for a way to remote aim smoothing, which accelerates the look speed of characters over a short time. "We hear you loud and clear," said Ford. "We're going to add two options in an upcoming patch. First, we'll add a slider for aim smoothing. It will default to the current smoothing/acceleration in the game today (full smoothing, low acceleration). As you drag it towards zero, you'll get less smoothing (higher acceleration). At zero, smoothing is disabled (instant acceleration)." This means players who play less aim-intensive characters (like Mei or Roadhog) will be able to turn more quickly, while snipers who opt for Widowmaker or Hanzo will be to fine-tune their headshots.

The game will also add another new feature, called Linear Ramp. "If you use this technique along with disabled aim smoothing," Ford said, "you will rotate commensurate to the angle you deflect the aim stick multiplied by your sensitivity." Basically, the further you move the stick away from the center, the faster the camera will move instantly.

Our Take
I play most of my Overwatch on PC, but seeing Blizzard continue to add details like this is still great to see.
