Digital Foundry Dissects Breath of the Wild's 1.1.1 Update

by Zak Wojnar on Apr 04, 2017 at 03:21 PM

There's a nigh-universal consensus that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the greatest video games ever made, but that doesn't mean it's perfect. The game's framerate is known to chug at points, especially in areas like Kakariko Village and Korok Forest. The game's latest patch, version 1.1.1, was released this week, and Nintendo was vague with what improvements it brought to the open-world adventure, stating only that "Adjustments have been made to make for a more pleasant gaming experience."

The team at Eurogamer's Digital Foundry dug deeper and found that the new patch offers significant improvements to Zelda's framerate throughout the adventure. While it's still not a solid 30 FPS across the board, Kakariko Village errs much closer to the FPS threshold than it ever before. Korok Forest's improvements are less spectacular, but still noticeable. The Wii U version of Breath of the Wild also received the patch, but the experience is generally only marginally improved on Nintendo's last-generation console.

Our Take
Many of us are still neck-deep in Hyrule, finding secrets and hunting down every last quest we can find. It's nice to know that the experience is smoother, and to have the concrete numbers to back up Nintendo's cryptic patch notes. Thanks, Digital Foundry!
