Overwatch Director Says Map Editor Could Come In Distant Future

by Brian Shea on Mar 21, 2017 at 10:51 AM

On the heels of today's Overwatch title update, director Jeff Kaplan popped into a forum thread to talk about one of Blizzard's long-term plans with Overwatch. The thread's topic was if a map editor would ever come to the game, and Kaplan provided some clarity on topic.

"We are extremely open-minded about releasing a map editor for Overwatch someday," Kaplan posted on the Battle.net forums. "But because Overwatch was made with a brand new engine, this is not a small task or one which can happen any time soon. We have this on our long-term road map and believe heavily in user-made content. But there are many challenges ahead of us and it will be a very long road before our editor can be made available to the public."

Overwatch released in 2016 to widespread critical acclaim. The team-based first-person shooter scored our highest review honor and even took secured our 2016 Game of the Year award. The shooter has received regular content updates including new heroes, maps, modes, and events. The most recent content update hit earlier today and added a new tank hero named Orisa.

Our Take
You don't see this level of transparency from many developers these days, so it's refreshing to see Kaplan consistently pop in and interact with the community like this. I don't know how much I'd use a map editor,  and I think I'd prefer to play content produced by Blizzard, but it is great to know the team has this kind of update in mind.
