Reader Discussion – What's Your Favorite Gaming Collectible?

by Suriel Vazquez on Mar 11, 2017 at 11:30 AM

Collectibles can make an otherwise barren world feel alive. They can work as secrets that give games that lived-in feeling, or as ways to incrementally upgrade your character. But sometimes, they can be boring chores that are only there to give you something to do. But what games nail it?

I'm playing a lot of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and most of its collectibles are wonderful. The shrines (and there are a lot of shrines) offer some pretty rewards for solving a small number of puzzles in a contained space. Even better, the Korok Seeds you can find throughout Hyrule don't just populate the map: You have to solve some sort of puzzle before you get them, whether it's looking under a rock, hitting a few targets, or performing some other sort of task. Making you work for the makes them infinitely more interesting. Both make Breath of the Wild's world worth running around in, and they're a great example of how to do collectibles right.

So what are you favorite gaming collectibles? Do Pokémon count? If so, are they the very best? What games definitely nailed these extra trinkets for you? Sound off in the comments.
