Report: Eshop Purchases Tied To Online Account On Switch

by Suriel Vazquez on Feb 18, 2017 at 09:22 AM

Nintendo and online services haven't mixed well. One issue the company's systems have had for a while is locking digital purchases to the console where they were made, which made transferring games a difficult process (especially with all the hardware iteration Nintendo does on its handhelds). But, if recent reports are anything to go by, the Switch may be bucking that particular trend.

A NeoGAF user recently who received their Switch early has posted an image of a message he found while perusing their new console.

"Your Nintendo Account contains your Nintendo eShop purchase history and current balance," the statements reads. "By re-linking your Nintendo Account after initializing the console, it will be possible to redownload any software or DLC purchased using that account. (Software that has been discontinued may not be available for redownload in some cases.)"

If the image is indeed accurate, this could mean we'll finally be able to transfer games from one Switch to the next without the need for a convoluted process (as is the case on the 3DS). We've reached out to Nintendo to confirm whether this is the case and will update this story should we hear back.

Our Take
There's probably a lot to say about how this could be indicative of a new online strategy from Nintendo and how the company might finally be listening to fans and blah blah blah, but how'd that person get a Switch so damn early, huh? Where's mine!?
