Traditionally, western ports of the fabled Ys franchise have been handled by XSEED Games, but that's about to change, just in time for the series' 30th anniversary.

Nippon Ichi Software, publishers of such acclaimed Japanese titles as Disgaea and Danganronpa, are bringing Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana to North America. The latest entry in the long-running franchise follows the series' iconic red-headed protagonist, Adol, who finds himself shipwrecked on a cursed island, while experiencing recurring dreams of a blue-haired woman named Dana.

During Adol's quest to uncover the mystery of the island, players will help him to rescue other shipwrecked passengers and establish a village which will act as their base of operations. The battle system promises lightning-fast combat and the ability to switch playable characters on-the-fly.

In Japan, Ys VIII released for Vita in July 2016, and is currently scheduled to come out on PS4 on May 25. The game is due out in North America this year for both systems .

Our Take
While Ys might not have the same clout and name recognition as genre giants like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, it's still a highly-respected JRPG series, and we're glad to see that the series is continuing to receive support in the west. Also, it's nice to see that not every publisher has completely abandoned Sony's underrated PlayStation Vita; the device has a small-but-passionate following, and they deserve to have a bone thrown their way every once in a while.
