Microsoft Cancels Platinum's Scalebound

by Kyle Hilliard on Jan 09, 2017 at 08:52 AM

Rumors began appearing online early today, but we have now received an official statement from Microsoft confirming the cancellation of Scalebound.

After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for “Scalebound.”

Announced as an Xbox One exclusive, Scalebound was in development by Platinum and being directed by Hideki Kamiya of Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, and Bayonetta fame. The game took place in a part fantasy, part science-ficiton world where players would fight alongside dragons. Exactly why the game was cancelled is currently unclear.

Our Take
A game's cancellation is never good news. Scalebound had an interesting idea – fighting side-by-side and against gigantic dragons – but it never seemed to garner excitement whenever it was shown. It's possible another publisher might pick it up, but that seems unlikely. I also don't know  what this means for Platinum's long-term future.
