Blizzard Has No Plans To Remaster Old Warcraft Games At This Time

by Michael Leri on Nov 08, 2016 at 08:55 AM

Even though Blizzard is remastering Diablo inside of Diablo III in an upcoming patch, the team has no plans to revisit Warcraft 1 and 2. Blizzard co-founder Frank Pearce told fans during a Q&A session at Blizzcon 2016 that, despite their love for the series, the first Warcraft: Orcs and Humans won't be remastered because it's "just not that fun anymore."

Pearce went on the say that Blizzard still has the original source code for all of its games, which allowed them to look into the possibility of touching up those early Warcraft games.

"We had some dedicated folks that were passionate about the idea, dig up the Warcraft 1 assets and code," said Pearce. "They got it working and they got it running in a window. And I played it. Warcraft: Orcs & Humans was awesome... for its time. I promise you, in today's world, by today's standards, it's just not that fun anymore."

Although, as Blizzcon proved, Pearce stated that Blizzard would rather pour their limited resources into "amazing content for World of Warcraft for you guys, or for Overwatch, or evaluating what a future project pipeline might be."

While the dream seems dead for some fans wanting to go back to the first Warcraft, Blizzard co-founder and president Mike Morhaime was quick to say "At this time!" after Pearce gave his explanation.

Our Take
Some games do not age well and, in our remaster-heavy economy, we don't always remember that. It's a noble move to make that call in such a public and candid way.
