Second Evolution Fighting Game Tournament, Evo Japan, Coming In 2018

by Suriel Vazquez on Sep 15, 2016 at 02:44 PM

The Evolution Champion Series is the biggest fighting tournament in the world. The event is now so popular, in fact, that a second iteration of the tournament was announced at this year's event. Now we know when the event is coming.

Evo Japan is now scheduled to happen sometime in 2018, as both the official event page and Evo head Joey Cuellar posted on Twitter. The lineup of fighting game tounraments at the event has yet to be announced.

Last week, fighting game website Shoryuken reported that "Evo Japan LLC" had been registered as legal entity in Japan. The company is a co-venture between SRKX Productions (which runs the American version of the tournament) and Japanese companies: Shochiku Broadcasting (which owns a number of television channels in Japan), Aetas (which owns Japanese gamging site 4Gamer), and Hearts United Group (which is owned by Aetas, meaning Aetas owns a majority stake). The three Japanese companies have split at $1 million stake in the company.

Our Take
That Japanese media conglomerates are getting into the Evo tournament could be big. With all the investment money thrown into from the get-go, Evo Japan could turn out to be very different from its American counterpart. Hopefully it's able to properly encapsulate what makes the fighting game community special. I'm also wondering how the lineup of games will differ.
