A Mystery Status Effect Is Spreading Through Destiny

by Joe Juba on Sep 15, 2016 at 12:31 PM

If you're one of the many people playing Destiny right now in anticipation of Rise of Iron, you may have noticed something strange going on. Some players seem to be getting "infected" with status boosts that may be tied to a larger Destiny-related plan.

Here's what we know so far: Some players have received an effect that boosts XP and reputation gains. It first surfaced during a stream from Mr_Amplified (as pictured above and seen in this clip), and seems to coincide with a comment in the chat from user Owl Sector. This buff was called Splendor 2.6, but variations with different names have also been spotted. The buff appears as a glittering swarm around players' heads, and persists on the account after changing characters and even logging out.

Whatever is happening, it's clearly building up to something. An Owl Sector website appeared (as part of bungie.net, no less) with names corresponding to the status effects circulating along with other cryptic info. Is this some sort of ARG, perhaps? Only time will tell.

Our Take
The Destiny community is nothing if not dedicated, so you can count on the mystery becoming clearer in the coming days – maybe even hours. Until then, it's fun to speculate.
