4K Ultra Blu-Rays Will Not Work On The PlayStation 4 Pro

by Suriel Vazquez on Sep 07, 2016 at 10:47 AM

Although the newly-announced PlayStation 4 Pro will run games and videos at a 4K resolution, it will not work with 4K Ultra Blu-Ray movies.

At today's PlayStation Meeting conference, a Sony representative confirmed with Game Informer the console will not be compatible with Ultra Blu-Rays movie discs. 4K movies will still be available on the console via apps and streaming services. Not running these discs is an interesting move for Sony, especially considering Mircosoft's currently available Xbox One S can run them.

The PlayStation 4 Pro is set to launch on November 10 for $399. You can read more details about the system here.

Our Take
I can't say I'll have much need for Ultra Blu-Ray discs, since I don't watch many Blu-Rays at the moment (why do I have to watch pre-roll ads when I've already paid money for the movie?), but this is still a large omission. I imagine even someone like me will need an Ultra Blu-Ray player at one point.
