EVE Online Getting Free Way To Play

by Matthew Kato on Aug 31, 2016 at 05:24 AM

EVE Online is introducing a free-to-play option that sits alongside its subscription model via different clone states.

Those who want to start playing for free or come back to their inactive accounts will enter as Alpha Clones. Alpha Clones are restricted to a specific set of skills and skill levels such as tech one frigates, destroyers, and cruisers. Omega Clones, meanwhile, are the paying customers who can play the game like they always have.

This new structure is coming in November alongside an update.

For more information on the move, check out developer CCP Games' extensive blog post and FAQ.

Our Take
I'm not an EVE player, but this seems like a sensible way to invite new players while being true to those who've made the game what it is up to this point.
