Did You Know Gaming Delves Into Luigi's Extensive History

by Elise Favis on Aug 28, 2016 at 12:24 PM

This week's Did You Know Gaming, a video game themed trivia show on YouTube, puts the spotlight on the green-clad plumber Luigi. The clip explores his inception, appearances in the Mario franchise, and his stand-alone Luigi's Mansion titles, along with facts you might not have known.

Luigi's iconic green outfit was the result of technical limitations because of limited color palettes. Nintendo developers wanted Mario and Luigi to contrast in some way so that each was distinguishable, and the color green was one of the few options.

There are, however, some rare instances where Luigi didn't appear in his traditional green shirt and cap. In a Japanese anime series from 1986 titled Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission To Rescue Peach!, Luigi appears in blue overalls and a yellow sweater.

While Luigi is known as the cowardly brother, his name in Italian ironically represents bravery. In Japanese, Luigi's name translates to Ruiji, which means "similar."
