Microsoft Ships 1 Million Xbox One Elite Controllers

by Mike Futter on Jun 29, 2016 at 02:58 AM

When Microsoft announced the Xbox One Elite controller last year, we wondered if there was a substantial market for a premium gamepad. After selling out immediately and difficulty meeting demand during the holiday, it’s clear that the controller is a hit.

Yesterday, Xbox boss Phil Spencer announced that the company had shipped its millionth Elite controller. The customizable gamepads retail for $150. By comparison, Valve has sold half that number of Steam controllers in approximately the same amount of time.

Microsoft announced a new version of the Elite at E3 this year. The new deco features Gears of War styling.

Microsoft is also shipping a new version of the standard Xbox One controller alongside the Xbox One S. Those feature an improved wireless range and on-board Bluetooth.

Our Take
The Xbox One Elite controller is my go-to these days. I’ve found myself using the rear paddles more as I customize profiles for each game I’m playing. The $150 price is hefty, but the build quality and performance make it worthwhile if you are a dedicated Xbox One or PC gamer.
