CD Projekt Red Appears To Have Trademarked Gwent: The Witcher Card Game In Europe

by Mike Futter on Jun 08, 2016 at 04:03 AM

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a vast and enchanting experience filled with monsters and peril. But have you heard of this little card game called Gwent?

While card-based minigames aren’t unique to The Witcher 3 (Pazaak and Triple Triad are just two others that come to mind), Gwent has garnered quite the following. CD Projekt Red produced real decks, and if a trademark filing is any indication, a standalone digital version is coming.

NerdLeaks uncovered a filing in the European Union, which is still visible on the European Union Intellectual Property Office website. The database entry indicates it the mark was filed on June 6. An accompanying logo (above) completes the package.

We know that CD Projekt is working on some unannounced games, we suspect this might be officially revealed at or before E3 next week. We’ve reached out to CD Projekt Red for comment, and we’ll update should we receive a response.

Our Take
This feels like a no-brainer for CD Projekt. People love Gwent in the context of The Witcher 3. Now we’ll (likely) see if it can stand shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Hearthstone.
