Bandai Namco Has Shipped 3 Million Copies Of Dark Souls III

by Mike Futter on May 11, 2016 at 03:21 AM

Bandai Namco has announced that Dark Souls III is the fastest-selling game in the series. Since its release on March 24 in Japan (April 12 in the west), the publisher has shipped 3 million copies worldwide.

1.5 million of those were shipped to North America, with 1 million going to Europe. The remaining 500,000 stayed at home in Japan. The series has now totaled 13 million units shipped across platforms.

Bandai also reported its financial performance for the full year this morning, though Dark Souls couldn’t keep the entire company afloat.

Revenues were up 1.8 percent for the year ended March 31, 2016, but operating income fell 11.9 percent and net income dropped by 8 percent. Bandai still closed the year in the black, with profits of ¥34.58 billion ($317.57 million).

Our Take
It has been most interesting to watch From Software’s recent growth starting with Demon’s Souls on the PlayStation 3. The discussion around the series challenge has been a unique cycle of awe, frustration, triumph. Even if you don’t particularly enjoy the Souls series, it’s hard to deny the indelible mark it’s left on the medium.
