Hironobu Sakaguchi Kicks Off Square's Final Fantasy XV Press Conference

by Andrew Reiner on Mar 30, 2016 at 04:29 PM

Hironobu Sakaguchi, who you may know as the father of Final Fantasy that eventually left Square Enix to found Mistwalker Corporation, is apparently still on good terms with his old employers. At tonight's Uncovered: Final Fantasy XV press conference, the lights dimmed, and Sakaguchi surprised the crowd as he walked across the stage, the spotlight rightfully on him. Sakaguchi talked briefly about the franchise he created, and said that he talked to Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata about the direction the series is going in. Tabata told him that Final Fantasy is going back to its "challenger roots."

He then said he was excited to see if Final Fantasy has rediscovered its true nature, a surprising statement from Square and Sakaguchi, as it implies the series went in the wrong direction in the past.

The big takeaway is that Sakaguchi was once again on a Square Enix stage. Could a co-developed game between Mistwalker and Square be in our future? Time will tell, but at the very least, it was great to see the creator of the series back to kick off a new journey.
