The Strong Museum of Play in Rochester has announced the fifteen finalists for this year’s Video Game Hall of Fame class. The roster is a who’s who of classic titles.

This year’s inductees will join last year’s inaugural class. 2014’s group consists of:

  • Doom
  • Pac-Man
  • Pong
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Tetris
  • World of Warcraft

This year’s roster of nominees includes some of gaming’s most influential titles. The possible inductees include:

  • Elite
  • Final Fantasy
  • Grand Theft Auto III
  • John Madden Football
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Minecraft
  • Nurburgring
  • The Oregon Trail
  • Pokémon Red and Green
  • Sid Meier’s Civilization
  • The Sims
  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Space Invaders
  • Street Fighter II
  • Tomb Raider

Some of these are returning to the nomination list after failing to get in last year. Minecraft, The Oregon Trail, Pokémon, The Sims, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Space Invaders are under consideration for the second year.

The winners, which are selected by a panel of journalists, academics, and others familiar with the video game industry, will be announced on Thursday, May 5, at 10:30 a.m. Eastern in Rochester, New York. Disclosure: Game Informer editor-in-chief Andy McNamara is a member of the selection committee.

Selection criteria include a game’s status as an icon, its longevity, geographical reach, influence on other games, entertainment, or pop culture. According to the Strong Museum, the final criterion can be considered even if the other three have not been met.

Our Take
This is a fantastic roster of nominees, and each is well worthy of consideration. As a former resident of Rochester, I'd certainly recommend a visit if you're in the area. It's not only a wonderful place to bring children, but the Toy and Video Game Halls of Fame exhibits have something to offer adults, too.
