Oculus Rift Games Can Be Sold On Steam, Too

by Mike Futter on Mar 28, 2016 at 06:24 AM

Oculus has launched its own software store alongside this week’s slow rollout of the Rift. The company isn’t chaining developers to its storefront, though.

In a blog post today, the company laid out some new details for developers that want to sell their software directly or via Steam. There are some requirements, including users being able to return to the home screen, see overlays, and get notifications.

Users will need to toggle a setting in the desktop app. If you want to run software from outside the Oculus store, you’ll need to turn on the “Unknown Sources” setting.

The advantage for developers is that Oculus won’t take a cut. This includes for in-app purchases.

In addition to the Oculus storefront, two other options have officially been made available. Oculus Concepts, formerly called Oculus Share, is a place for tech demos and experiments.

Oculus Early Access is where you’ll find full games that are ready for player feedback. We’ll have more on the Rift this week.

Our Take
Oculus is essentially keeping its storefront and platform open. A single toggle isn’t a frustration to me, especially as it allows users to make a conscious choice to step outside the curated, certified garden of the Oculus Store. For those that want to access things like Valve’s virtual desktop, this is going to be a must.
