Rumor: Sony Is Making More Powerful "PlayStation 4.5"
We’re only a few years into this generation of hardware, but Sony is reportedly looking into raising the bar with an upgraded iteration of the PS4. More than just a redesign, this rumored hardware would add increased power and new features, making it a significant step up from the current version of the console.
According to a report from Kotaku, developers are saying that the “PS4.5” is currently is in the works, and features a new GPU that would support 4K resolution for gaming (the console already supports 4K photos and video), as well as assist with VR performance.
Almost all of the questions this rumor inspires are unanswered, like those relating to price, compatibility, and upgrading for current customers. Sony declined to comment in the original report, but if a PS4.5 really is in the works, we might hear more soon. E3 is only a few months away.

Our Take
If all of the rumors are true, I am curious how Sony plans to keep a revamped PS4 affordable. The prospect of 4K gaming support (which is prohibitively expensive on PC) makes it hard to believe that new hardware would carry the current PS4’s $350 price tag. However, with PSVR on the horizon, it would make sense to release a new version of the console tailored to the VR experience.
