Tequila Works Reacquires The Rights To Whimsical Adventure Game Rime

by Kimberley Wallace on Mar 16, 2016 at 08:52 AM

Tequila Works took to Twitter today to make a big announcement, revealing that it has reacquired to rights to Rime from Sony Computer Entertainment. The team is currently working hard to realize its vision for the open-world adventure game. Originally, Rime was set to be a PlayStation 4 exclusive.

Rime turned heads when it was announced at Gamescom in 2013, and looked to take inspiration from the likes of Ico and Wind Waker. A year later, Sony announced that it would be a PlayStation 4 exclusive. Since then, we've heard very few updates on the project, which was a shame considering it had some interesting ideas. Tequila Works has said it was inspired by Studio Ghibli films like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. The game tasks you with escaping from an island and curse by platforming and solving puzzles.

The Twitter announcement is below, and it appears to show that Tequila Works is still passionate about Rime's potential.

Our Take
The good news is that this announcement means Tequila Works hasn't given up on the project, but it's still unclear exactly what this means. Tequila Works reacquiring the rights could mean a lot of things, such as the company being able to shop it around to more platforms. Tequila Works could be self-publishing or in the process of finding a new publisher. It's hard to know exactly what happened and why Sony and Tequila Works couldn't make a partnership work. There could have been creative differences or maybe Sony backed off after not enough progress had been on the project after a few years. Time will tell exactly what this means for the game and what platforms it will appear on. However, keep in mind that this doesn't necessarily reflect bad on the developer or the game.
