How EA Put Mike Tyson In UFC 2

by Joe Buchholz on Mar 15, 2016 at 08:23 AM

Mike Tyson is no stranger to the video game space. He made appearances in Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! and Fight Night Round 4, and now the 1998 and 2003 versions of Tyson are in EA Sports UFC 2.

EA Sports talks about the addition of Tyson in its Concept to Completion series of blog posts. Special accommodations were made to pare down Tyson’s fighting style in contrast to the more robust moveset of a UFC fighter.

“Mike can’t do any takedowns, submissions or even kicks in the game,” says Creative Director Brian Hayes. “He can move around on the ground or in the clinch, he can defend takedowns well, and his punches are absolutely devastating.”

The developers weren’t able to use Tyson’s assets from the Fight Night series, and had to rely on lower-resolution photos from 1998 to recreate the fearsome boxer. They even went to the lengths of having Tyson walk out to one of his signature songs complete with a towel draped over his head.

EA Sports UFC 2 released today for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and you can hear our thoughts on the game here. Also, you can watch former Editor Dan Ryckert try to take down Tyson in the original Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! here
