Halo Composer Marty O’Donnell Kickstarting Musical Prequel To PlayStation VR’s Golem

by Mike Futter on Mar 11, 2016 at 02:35 AM

When it was announced at PlayStation Experience in December 2015, Highwire Games’ Golem captured our imagination. The trailer for the PlayStation VR title is layered with mystery and wonder, as players will control a Golem via in-game virtual reality (you can see that concept in the introduction trailer below).

There is much to learn about Golem’s world, and Highwire Games is teaming up with former Halo composer Marty O’Donnell to help lay the groundwork. The duo have launched a Kickstarter for a musical prequel that explores the themes players will explore in the game.

Highwire is careful to explain that this is not Golem’s soundtrack. “It is a musical prequel; composed, arranged and recorded as an independent work,” the company says. “It will be released before the game and introduce you to the world and themes of Golem.”

O’Donnell and Highwire seek $45,000 to accomplish the project, with a complete budget breakdown available on the campaign page. Highwire Games is contributing another $20,000 above and beyond the project goal.

You can see the pitch video, which includes some of the music for the game on the campaign page.

Our Take
I enjoy Marty O’Donnell’s music and Golem looks like a fascinating project. It’s a bit difficult to reconcile the Kickstarter campaign. The game is already happening on a major platform and there is some overlap, even if this is an extension.

The campaign goal is modest, though. The budgeting is clear, and the scope is fixed without much chance of creep. This isn’t a common use of Kickstarter, but the campaign is easy to understand and O’Donnell certainly has credibility.
