Orcs Must Die Series Deeply Discounted As Unchained Heads Toward Open Beta

by Mike Futter on Feb 23, 2016 at 04:48 AM

Robot Entertainment’s action-meets-tower defense Orcs Must Die franchise has grown from a single-player affair to a cooperative experience. With the latest entry, Unchained, the model has changed in a number of ways.

The third installment is a free-to-play game that blends the series’ traditional gameplay with MOBA elements. Teams of five can lay traps, escort minions, and push through the opposing players to capture the enemy core.

Instead of dealing damage to it though, teams win by getting their minions into the core. The tower defense twist on the genre permeates the experience.

Now, nearly two years since its PAX East 2014 reveal, Orcs Must Die Unchained is heading to open beta. To celebrate the imminent (but still undated) event, Robot Entertainment is offering deep discounts on its first two Orcs games on Steam.

Everything in the franchise (full games and DLC) is 90 percent off. If you want to dive in with the franchise pack (both games and all DLC), it’ll cost you a mere $3.49.

Our Take
I've enjoyed my previews of Orcs Must Die Unchained, and the game has been updated and tweaked significantly along the way. It's got elements of MOBAs, but the traps and incentive to stick with minions set it apart.
