Confirmed: Dark Souls Xbox One Backward Compatibility Coming

by Kyle Hilliard on Feb 16, 2016 at 01:58 AM

Update: Microsoft has opened pre-purchasing for Dark Souls III. The product listings confirm yesterday's leak regarding Dark Souls backward compatibility.

The game is being sold at two price points on the Xbox website and Xbox One console. The standard $59.99 edition and the $84.99 version that includes the season pass both offer up (for a limited time) a digital copy of Dark Souls playable on Xbox One.

The product page suggests that codes will be delivered in seven to ten days, suggesting that you'll be able to play it digitally on Xbox One quite soon.

Original Story (February 15, 2016 @ 12:55 p.m. Central):

The page has since been pulled down, but a cached version reveals the Xbox One edition of Dark Souls III will include a backwards compatible version of Dark Souls free for those who pre-order. You can click the image above to see the full page as it existed, including the free game offer.

We've reached out to Bandai Namco for conformation and will update this story if and when we receive a response. If this is truly the case, then this doubles as two announcements: The free game included as a pre-order bonus, and future backwards compatibility for the Xbox 360 version of the first Dark Souls on Xbox One.

Our Take
For now, this is unconfirmed. It seems Microsoft may have inadvertently pulled the trigger on the page early. But with games like the Xbox One version of Fallout 4 including a code to download a backwards compatible Xbox 360 version of Fallout 3, this seems like a pretty safe bet. If this truly is the case, then that means the whole Dark Souls trilogy will be playable on Xbox One, which is a good thing.
