Transformers: Earth Wars Is Clash Of Clans In Disguise

by Mike Futter on Feb 10, 2016 at 02:30 AM

In case the sheer amount of money that Supercell’s Clash of Clans earns daily ($1.1 million as of November 2015), you might look at the flood of clones as a barometer of success. The latest of these comes from Hasbro and Space Ape Games, starring Optimus Prime and the rest of the Transformers.

There’s some pull here for fans. As you can see in the trailer below, the art style is borrowed from the original 1980s designs. Peter Cullen and Frank Welker return to voice Optimus Prime and Megatron respectively.

Space Ape’s previous games, Rival Kingdoms and Samurai Siege, also appear to be riffs on the Clash of Clans model. You’ll build a base, attack other players’ fortresses, and horde the Transformers’ precious power supply, energon.

Transformers: Earth Wars will be available for download on iOS and Android for free this Spring.

Our Take
I am a big Transformers fan, but if this doesn’t innovate on the build-and-attack loop that Clash of Clans popularized, it won’t live long on my phone. Peter Cullen’s deep, authoritative voice will only carry me so far.
