Magic: The Gathering Puzzle Quest Update Rebalances Cards, Adds Challenges

by Mike Futter on Feb 02, 2016 at 10:49 AM

Magic: The Gathering is the latest property to get the Puzzle Quest treatment, and developer Hibernum has blended the two cleverly. The game, which was released in December, sees its first major update today.

Included is a rebalancing for one of the Planeswalkers (Gideon), and more than 20 cards. There are also 25 new heroic encounters and a quick battle system that pits players against player-created decks controlled by the AI.

Playing in the new mode earns points that can yield rewards, including currency, packs, and cards from specific colors. This is another path to rare and mythic cards that typically have a greater chance of showing up in Fat Packs (approximately $10 of purchased currency) and Big Boxes (slightly more than $20 of purchased currency). Rewards will be distributed via a leaderboard system, with anyone who at least wins one match receiving something.

Daily rewards have been retuned, also. Instead of requiring 31 consecutive days of logins to receive a free Fat Pack, you need only register 21 during the month. Consecutive check-ins will net better rewards, as they did before, including earned and cash currency, as well as packs.

The blend of collectible card game and match-3 taps into the color affinities and deckbuilding of Magic: The Gathering, while pulling from Puzzle Quest's history of using colored matches to fuel powers. The difference this time out is that any mana collected can be stored to play cards, however using aligned colors grants a bonus while opposing hues yield less.

Magic: The Gathering Puzzle Quest is free-to-play and available on iOS and Android devices.
