PlayStation 4 Sales Reach 35.9 Million Units Worldwide, The Last Guardian Reconfirmed For 2016

Sony has announced a strong holiday season, with sales of PlayStation 4 consoles to customers totaling more than 5.7 million units. The company has also shared the latest life-to-date totals and software performance for the holiday.

Total PlayStation 4 sell-through (units sold to customers) has reached 35.9 million units as of January 3, 2016. The company sold 35 million copies of games, inclusive of retail and digital.

PlayStation Plus memberships were up 60 percent at the close of 2015 from the same period last year. Sony managed this despite a first-party lineup it labeled as “sparse” earlier in the year.

The company’s upcoming lineup includes Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Ratchet & Clank, and Street Fighter V as a console exclusive. The Last Guardian was also reconfirmed for a 2016 release in Sony’s statement, despite a relatively quiet period since the title’s reintroduction.

Our Take
Sony has clearly pulled out ahead this generation, which hopefully means that fans can refocus “platform enthusiasm” on things that matter: games. There are a ton of great titles coming from first- and third-parties and a lot of reason to be in love with the hobby right now.
