The Overwatch Progression System: Where It's Been And Where It's Going

by Daniel Tack on Dec 16, 2015 at 09:57 AM

One of the biggest questions when it comes to Blizzard's upcoming team shooter Overwatch is how progression will be handled. Will there be functional bonuses? Cosmetics? Meaningless dabs of experience points? Spraypaint? Achievements? The team has tried a few systems before, but those systems have been scrapped, and now Overwatch is preparing to try something new.

You can hear game director Jeff Kaplan talk about the previous progression systems and what's to come in this video.

Our Take
My time in the Overwatch beta has been incredibly fun, and I'm not even certain that I'd need a progression system to keep playing when it launches - but it's always nice to have some form of the proverbial carrot on a stick for players to chase after. I can't see Overwatch doing anything but cosmetic rewards, but they'll have to be careful with those too in order for players to be able to visually pick out each character on the frenetic battlefield. I'm definitely curious to see what the team finally settles on for a progression system.
