Super Mario Galaxy Appears To Be Headed For Wii U Digital Re-Release

by Mike Futter on Dec 14, 2015 at 01:57 AM

At the start of 2015, Nintendo announced a first wave of Wii titles re-released as native Wii U games. Digital re-releases included Punch-Out, Metroid Prime Trilogy, and Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Starting with Mario’s planet-hopping sequel was a bit odd, but we were glad to see these games get digital re-releases without having to boot into the Wii menu. It seems like the first Galaxy game is now getting the same treatment.

The ESRB has added the Wii U to its platform listing for the game. This isn’t a new rating altogether, rather the Wii U has just been appended to the original.

We’ve reached out to Nintendo for comment and will update once we hear back or if there is a formal announcement with timing. For more astronomical adventures, check out our Replay for Super Mario Galaxy.

Our Take
There’s a Nintendo Direct tomorrow focused on Super Smash Bros., so it would be strange if this were connected. More likely, Nintendo is preparing either a late-year surprise or a new year push. I’ve not played either of the Super Mario Galaxy games, so this gives me (and others who missed them) an easy way to dive in.
