Gearbox Opens New Studio In Quebec

by Mike Futter on Dec 11, 2015 at 04:10 AM

Gearbox is expanding its operations from its home in Dallas, Texas. The company has announced a new studio located in Quebec.

The Quebec City location is in the process of hiring, with the goal of ramping up toward triple-A production throughout 2016. The studio is being led by Sebastien Caisse and Pierre-Andre Dery.

Caisse most recently worked with Quebecor Media as business development director. In that position, he partnered with Sony and Microsoft, among others.

Dery served as an art director for Activision, working on Skylanders and The Amazing Spider-Man. He’s also been involved With Far Cry, Deus Ex, and World of Warcraft while at Volta, a visual development studio specializing in concept art.

No specific projects have been announced.

Our Take
Between Battleborn, the inevitable Borderlands sequel, and whatever the studio hopes to do with the Homeworld franchise, it’s clearly more than the existing team can reasonably handle. Expanding into Canada gives Gearbox access to a new talent pool that will have a different perspective, similar to how 2K Australia handled Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (before that location was shut down).
