[Update] Shadow Complex Remastered Confirmed, PC Version Free Right Now

by Mike Futter on Dec 03, 2015 at 03:23 PM

Update:

The ratings listing for Shadow Complex Remastered that appeared online this week was indeed accurate, but it didn’t tell the whole story. At The Game Awards tonight, Chair announced the updated version for PC and current-gen consoles.

To celebrate, the PC version is free now through the end of 2015 on the official Shadow Complex website. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 editions are coming in 2016.

For those who enjoyed the original 2009 release, an additional piece of good news comes along with word of the remastered edition. “We’re super excited to introduce a remastered version to fans, old and new, and for the opportunity it creates for us to do more in the Shadow Complex universe,” says Chair co-founder Donald Mustard.

Original Story:

Looking back on last-generation’s Xbox Live Arcade reveals a number of standout games. One of them, Chair’s Shadow Complex (released in 2009), might be getting revamp for PC players.

PEGI, the European ratings group, has listed Shadow Complex Remastered (the game received a PEGI 16 rating, indicating that it includes violence or sexual activity that looks similar to real life) . Chair co-founder Donald Mustard said in 2013 that the studio hasn’t forgotten the property, and there was talk that a sequel was already well into the design phase in 2011.

The Metroid-like Shadow Complex puts players in the shoes of an unwitting hero (voiced by Nolan North), who must infiltrate an underground base to unravel a conspiracy. Armor and weapon upgrades await, allowing deeper access into the facility and the means to reach hidden areas.

Chair recently announced a joint partnership with Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams for an upcoming game called Spyjinks for PC and mobile. The studio has previously worked on the successful Infinity Blade series.

Our Take
As we saw with Sega’s move to port Valkyria Chronicles to PC (and then later the announcement that the series is getting a new entry), this could be a way to test the waters for the IP. It opens the door for a larger audience, and given the architecture of the current-generation consoles, a release across Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC would make sense for a follow-up.
