The Science Behind Kylo Ren's Lightsaber

by Andrew Reiner on Nov 23, 2015 at 04:02 AM

Kylo Ren's lightsaber has been the talk of the Star Wars world from the moment it flashed to life in the first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. At first glance, it appears to be designed like a claymore, but recently revealed information from a Star Wars exhibit at California's Disneyland shows that the quillons are more exhaust ports than a hand guard.

A plaque at the exhibit for Ren's lightsaber reads: "Kylo Ren's unusual lightsaber is an ancient design, although the one he carries is recently constructed. The crossguard design, or quillons, are raw power vented from the primary central blade." In several shots from the film's newer trailers, we see Ren's saber burning much hotter than a standard saber.

We don't know much about Ren's motivation in Force Awakens yet, but from his saber design to his apparent obsession with Darth Vader, he appears to be exploring the history of the Sith order. We'll know soon enough, however, as Force Awakens opens in theaters on December 17.
