Reader Discussion: Do You Enjoy Really Difficult Games?

by Jeff Marchiafava on Nov 23, 2015 at 12:15 PM

Bloodborne's The Old Hunters DLC comes out tomorrow, and as Dan Tack says in his review, it serves up the game's most challenging content yet. Does that make you want to run out and buy it, or simply run away?

From Software is notorious for making unforgivingly difficult games, but for a niche audience of gamers, that's part of the appeal; Bloodborne and the Dark Souls series require you to earn your victories, and when you do, the sense of achievement is all the more potent. This sentiment rings true in my own personal experience with From Software's games as well – I still haven't beaten Bloodborne, but much of my enjoyment so far has come from tackling seemingly impossible odds and managing to overcome them.

That said, the extreme degree of difficulty that Tack describes in his review for The Old Hunters has me second-guessing whether I want to take it on. Bloodborne is already a bit of an anomaly for me; oftentimes I opt for a normal difficulty when I play games, and even occasionally bump games down to easy so I can just run through the experience without too much challenge. So far Bloodborne has managed to make the extra pain worth it, but when a From Software super fan like Tack says that The Old Hunters is crazy hard, it makes want to just stick to the base game.

What about you? Does the increased difficulty of The Old Hunters appeal to you? Or do you prefer a guaranteed victory? Share your thoughts on difficult games and calls to "git gud" in the comments below.
