Nintendo Announces Lineup Of Holiday Bundles And Discounts

by Mike Futter on Nov 13, 2015 at 02:19 AM

Nintendo has stepped up its bundle game in time for the busiest shopping day of the year. The company has announced a number of Black Friday bundles and discounts for those looking to bring a Wii U or 3DS home for the holidays.

Yesterday, Nintendo announced the biggest of these. Its packaging a Wii U with both Super Smash Bros. and Splatoon for just $279. Some retailers will also be discounting this further, bringing the price to under $250.

The New 3DS XL will be $179.99 at some retailers. Walmart and Amazon are offering the original 3DS XL for $129.99 with a download code for Super Mario 3D Land.

Nintendo is also doing its part on the software side, dropping prices of some downloadable games by up to 50 percent. The sale begins on November 25 and runs through December 2. A full list of included titles is not yet announced.

Our Take
Bundles have become the industry way around permanent price drops, and all three manufacturers are delivering this year. While the price remains the same, it's easy for a customer to rationalize the included software as a "discount" on the price of the hardware because they would have wanted (though maybe not necessarily purchased) that particular game anyway. It's a clever way to motivate people at retail without being painted into a pricing corner for the rest of the year.
