Hearthstone's Newest Tavern Brawl Experiments With Co-Op Play

by Jeff Marchiafava on Nov 04, 2015 at 12:35 PM

You can now see what it's like to team up with another Hearthstone player in a limited time co-op challenge.

Tavern Brawl is a weekly event in Hearthstone that (normally) pits two players against each with specialized rules, cards, and sometimes pre-built decks. This week's Tavern Brawl is the most unique challenge yet, tasking both players to team up in order to defeat a powerful boss named Gearmaster Mechazod.

Surprisingly, Hearthstone's layout doesn't change for the fight – players still sit on opposite sides of the table. Instead, Gearmaster Mechazod  appears as a regular minion on the table, and will flip sides on each turn to attack the opposing player. Both players will have to use pre-built decks to attack Gearmaster Mechazod and try to keep their teammate alive – if either player loses, the match is over. The good news? Whether you take down Mechazod or not, both players will be rewarded with a Tavern Brawl card pack.

The Mechazod Tavern Brawl seems like a clear first step towards a long-rumored co-op mode for Hearthstone, which producer Yong Woo told us the team was interested in implementing during an interview at last year's Gamescom: "...we have a list of things we want to do with Hearthstone and we think they are all awesome," Woo said. "Co-op is one of them. I think a double-headed dragon could be really cool."

The Unite Against Mechazod Tavern Brawl is available until next Monday, November 9. Check out our thoughts on the latest expansion, The Grand Tournament, by reading our review.

Our Take
I haven't played Hearthstone for quite some time, but seeing how a dedicated co-op mode might work someday certainly has me interested. It might be time to pull up a chair again and brush off my Jerk Warrior custom deck – which will undoubtedly get my butt kicked in the ever-evolving metagame.
