Halo 5: Guardians Moves $400 Million In Games And Hardware During First Week

by Mike Futter on Nov 04, 2015 at 02:54 AM

Microsoft has announced significant first-week success for one of its pillar titles for the holiday season. Halo 5: Guardians is now the fastest-selling Xbox One game and has become the title with the highest first-week attach rate in the console’s two-year history.

The publisher says that Halo 5 is responsible for $400 million in sales, inclusive of “Halo 5: Guardians games and hardware.” Given the phrasing, we take this to mean bundles that include Halo 5. Controllers, like those bearing Halo 5 decoration, are typically considered accessories and likely do not factor in.

According to Microsoft, the Halo franchise is now worth $5 billion in lifetime sales. For more on the latest entry in the series, check out our review.

Our Take
Microsoft is largely uncontested this holiday on the software front. Halo 5 met with strong critical and commercial success. And while Rise of the Tomb Raider reviews aren’t out, I had a fantastic time previewing the first three hours a few weeks back.

Microsoft made smart moves this holiday in how it promoted software and bundled consoles for a broad cross-section of consumers. While I don’t think this will bring Xbox One sales to PlayStation 4 levels, this is going to be a great holiday for Microsoft.
