Star Trek Returns To Television In 2017

by Mike Futter on Nov 02, 2015 at 04:20 AM

While many of us are polishing our lightsabers and practicing our Jedi mind tricks in anticipation of The Force Awakens, another sci-fi bomb just dropped. Star Trek is coming back to television.

The show will be aired first-run on CBS' on-demand and streaming platform, CBS All Access. Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote and produced the 2009 Star Trek motion picture reboot and its sequel Star Trek: Into Darkness, will serve as executive producer.

No specific details have been revealed yet, other than the series will kick off in January 2017 and focus on new characters. Setting, including where it fits within the Star Trek timeline, have yet to be revealed.

The new show marks the franchise's return to television after the cancelation of Enterprise in 2005. Prior to that, Star Trek had a presence on TV for 18 continuous years beginning with The Next Generation in 1987 and carrying through Deep Space Nine and Voyager.
