No Man's Sky Isn't Going To Be A Surprise Release This Week

by Mike Futter on Oct 26, 2015 at 02:56 AM

Tomorrow, Sony takes the stage at Paris Games Week for the first time since TGS (and the first time in the West since E3). The publisher skipped Gamescom, promising to turn its European attention to this week's event in France.

A rumor has been floating based on a retailer listing that Hello Games' No Man's Sky would make a sudden appearance in final form this Tuesday. The developer has now flatly denied that the game will be released this week.

While we do expect Sony to have some big announcements tomorrow, this won't be one of them. However, that doesn't mean we won't hear more about No Man's Sky. The press conference will be streamed at 10 a.m. Pacific / 1 p.m. Eastern on Sony's Twitch channel.

Our Take
While No Man's Sky might not be ready for full release, we're not writing off a surprise beta. Sony has a habit of dropping content at its press conferences (remember P.T.?), but stealth releasing one of the platform's most anticipated games wouldn't be smart.

A beta to compete with Halo on its opening day, though? That's a way to grab mindshare without costing consumers a dime.
