Rise Of The Tomb Raider's Season Pass Adds New Tomb, Competitive Component, More

by Jeff Cork on Oct 07, 2015 at 05:10 AM

An Amazon listing a few days back revealed the existence of Rise of the Tomb Raider's season pass, but new details have popped up on the game's official Xbox.com home. The bundle will include a trio of larger updates, as well as several smaller downloads.

The text is still fairly sparse, but it provides a decent idea of what players can expect to get from their $29.99 – the price Amazon has it listed as. Here's what the Xbox.com store's post says:

The Season Pass for Rise of the Tomb Raider includes a range of content that will extend your single-player campaign, and also allow you to compete with friends. Three major releases will challenge you to survive the extreme conditions of Endurance Mode, explore a new tomb that houses an ancient terror in Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch, and combat waves of infected predators in Cold Darkness Awakened. In addition, a steady stream of outfits, weapons, and Expedition Cards beginning on Day 1 and continuing over four months will keep you customizing, expanding, and challenging your friends to new adventures.

There's not a traditional multiplayer mode in the game, so don't expect anything on the order of a co-op campaign or head-to-head competitive mode. Instead, something along the lines of leaderboards or time-trial challenges is more likely. Cold Darkness Awakened sounds like a fancy name for a horde-mode like enemy rush. Mike wrote about potential microtransactions in his recent hands-on preview for the game, and the mention of Expedition Cards further points in that direction.

Our Take
I'm pretty wary of season passes, particularly when the game they're for hasn't been released. I'll wait to see just how "major" these release are before cracking open my wallet. It would also be nice to know if all of the content will be arriving within that four-month timeframe of the game's launch, or if it'll be stretched beyond that period. Depending on what else I'm playing around that time, it's possible that my interest in Tomb Raider has once again been buried.
