Super Mario Maker Is Nintendo’s Latest Million-Selling Game

by Mike Futter on Sep 30, 2015 at 02:47 AM

Less than one month since its launch, Super Mario Maker has joined the list of Nintendo first-party million-sellers. The company announced the worldwide sales milestone this morning.

The more than 1 million players have created 2.2 million levels, which have been played a combined 75 million times. We’ve had some fun with it, too.

You can check out a rundown of levels created by Game Informer editors. You can also watch us play some of the stages built by our readers.

Our Take
While Super Mario Maker doesn’t interest me personally, it’s an important title for Nintendo right now. Not only does it help pick up the slack in a weak holiday lineup, but it serves Nintendo in a way that has yielded huge success for the company: viral buzz.

Spend any time on social media and you’ll see people talking about the levels they’ve created or explored. Combine that with integral use of the gamepad (something so many Nintendo titles fail to do), and you’ve got a recipe for good will that Nintendo needs in the Wii U’s sunset years.
