PlayStation 4 Firmware Update 3.0 Launches Tomorrow With YouTube Streaming

by Mike Futter on Sep 29, 2015 at 03:03 AM

Following approximately a month of beta, Sony is getting ready to release its next PlayStation 4 firmware update to the masses. The new version brings a host of changes, chief among them the ability to stream directly to YouTube.

Firmware 3.0 also includes a feature that allows users to upload short videos to Twitter (maximum ten seconds). There are editing tools for picking exactly which segment you want to share.

For those that prefer to get their PlayStation Plus games directly from the console instead of the web interface, there’s an easier way to do that. PlayStation Plus has its own section on the home screen so you can check out free games and discounts.

For those that prefer PNG to JPG format for screenshots, you can now choose which to capture in. You’ll also be able to see in-game events in a new hub area.

The new firmware will be available starting tomorrow. You should receive a prompt to download it and install. If not, you can access the update via the System menu.

Our Take
The latest firmware seems to include a few new features and a slate of improvements rather than a complete overhaul. This falls in line with how Sony approached XMB updates for the PS3. The inclusion of YouTube streaming is well-timed with the recent launch of YouTube Gaming.
