Rise Of The Tomb Raider Is Likely To Include In-App Transactions

by Mike Futter on Sep 24, 2015 at 03:07 AM

During my three-hour preview of Rise of the Tomb Raider that took place last week, I spent time exploring some of the wide open environments. As in the 2013 reboot, each of these has challenges associated with them, offering an XP reward for completion.

In one area, I happened to shoot down a hanging incense burner. This triggered a pop-up alerting me that it was tied to a challenge.

I spent time hunting down all seven to see what would happen. I was expecting a simple experience reward. What happened hinted at an unrevealed plan that might include microtransactions.

I was alerted that I had earned “credits” for completing the challenge. These could be redeemed in the marketplace for card packs. No other information was available, but I asked creative director Noah Hughes about it.

Microsoft, Square Enix, and Crystal Dynamics aren’t ready to reveal details, but these are tied to a mode or feature not present in our demo. “We will be talking more about that in the near feature. Generally, we are excited about offering ways for people to have a connected experience,” Hughes says. “We’ll share details in the future. It’s a separate facet of the game.”

Rise of the Tomb Raider will be out on November 10 for Xbox One and Xbox 360. For more, check out our preview of the first three hours.

Our Take
Given other places we’ve seen the term “card packs” pop up, chances are that there will be some opportunity to acquire these with real money. However, without knowing what they are used for, we can’t yet comment on more than the fact that this is a thing you’ll see when the game arrives.
