Here’s How Destiny: The Taken King’s Xur Will Work Starting This Weekend

by Mike Futter on Sep 17, 2015 at 11:16 AM

Ol’ tentacle face is getting some new goodies in his bag. When Xur shows up in Destiny tomorrow, you’ll see changes that are in line with Bungie’s retuned loot system.

Each week he’ll have a specific exotic weapon or an exotic engram. Bungie says the change is to reduce duplication and increase the drive toward exotics from quests and other gameplay activities.

He’ll also have something called the “three of coins.” This gives bosses a chance to give you one of those sweet yellowish orange engrams that signals a new exotic for your inventory. The more you have, the better the chance one hits your sack of loot.

Xur will also be the way to fill in your year one exotic collection. These will drop at pre-Taken King attack and defense levels, but you might want them for posterity. Note that the Vex Mythoclast and Necrochasm are still only available via the Vault of Glass and the convoluted upgrade path from The Dark Below respectively.

Our Take
The Taken King seems to have reinvigorated the Destiny community, though it hadn’t exactly faltered in the past year. The improved loot system and more engaging quests are a step forward for the game, addressing some (but not all) of the lingering problems from year one.
