Minecraft: Story Mode Episode 1 Has A Release Date, Retail ‘Season Pass Disc’ Coming Soon

by Mike Futter on Sep 16, 2015 at 04:00 AM

The first episode of Minecraft: Story Mode has been dated for digital release. For the first time, Telltale will also be distributing retail “season pass discs” shortly thereafter.

Order of the Stone, the first installment in the five-part saga, will be available worldwide on October 13. Launch platforms include PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC, and Mac. Apple and Android devices will get their versions on October 15. Wii U and Vita will arrive later.

Telltale usually releases hard copies of their games after all of the episodes have been made available digitally. This time out, a season pass disc enables the developer to do so shortly after the first episode’s release. The disc functions like any other retail disc (you can loan it to friend, for instance). It’ll be available on October 27. Future episodes will be automatically available via update if you go that route.

Today’s announcement also comes with news that Paul Reubens (a.k.a. Pee Wee Herman) will be part of the cast that includes Patton Oswalt, Catherine Taber, Brian Posehn, Ashley Johnson, Scott Porter, Martha Plimpton, Dave Fennoy, Corey Feldman, and Billy West. You’ll be able to customize your character and choose whether to play as a male or female Jesse.

Our Take
At PAX Prime, I had the chance to check out Minecraft: Story Mode. I didn’t know what to expect, given the source material’s complete lack of fixed narrative.

I was pleasantly surprised by how wonderfully charming it is. The voice acting is outstanding, and the elements of Minecraft’s crafting and combat that have permeated the partnership with Mojang work great.
