Lionhead Creative Director Gary Carr Leaves To Start New Studio

by Mike Futter on Sep 14, 2015 at 02:56 AM

After a 12-year tenure at the studio, Lionhead creative director Gary Carr has departed the company. Carr was reportedly working on new IP development at the studio, which has become known almost exclusively for the Fable series since the days of the original Xbox.

Gamespot reports the departure, which has been confirmed by Microsoft, and the news that Carr is leaving to begin his own studio. Prior to working at Lionhead under Peter Molyneux, Carr was with him at Bullfrog from 1989 through 1994.

In between his time at Bullfrog and rejoining Molyneux's team, Carr broke off to join Mucky Foot Productions. That studio was founded by three ex-Bullfrog developers and, prior to its closure in 2003, worked on Urban Chaos, Startopia, and Blade II.

Lionhead is getting near the release of Fable Legends, a free-to-play game for Xbox One and Windows 10. The title deviates from core Fable games (as have the more recent entries Fable: The Journey and Fable Heroes). The latest is a four-versus-one take on the franchise that puts one player in the shoes of the villain, laying traps and directing monsters to obstruct the heroes. It does not yet have a fixed open beta or release date.

Our Take
We don't know what Carr's departure means for new IP development at Lionhead and whether the studio will get back on track with more traditional releases after Fable Legends. While the Fable franchise has never been perfect, it has always been charming, with its own style and clever balance of sinister and humorous.
