by Kyle Hilliard on Aug 15, 2015 at 09:50 AM

We're still waiting for the release of Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, but in the meantime, shooting has officially begun on Star Wars: Rogue One.

The film takes place before the events of Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope and follows a band of resistance fighters as they attempt to steal the plans for the Death Star (spoiler alert: they'll probably retrieve them). You can read more about the film here.

Shooting has begun, and in honor of the event, Disney shared a photo from the set with the cast in full costume, as well as a new logo for the film which identifies the film as "A Star Wars Story".

Much of the film's cast has also been revealed. Initially, we only knew about Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) being in the film, but now we know Diego Luna (Milk), Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline), Donnie Yen (Ip Man, Blade II), Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly, Devils on the Doorstep), Forest Whitaker (Lee Daniels' The Butler), Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal, Casino Royale), Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler), and Alan Tudyk (Firefly) who is motion-capturing a digital character, will also be in the film.

Rogue One releases December 16, 2016, and is being directed by Gareth Edwards, best know for the recent reboot, Godzilla.
