Former BioWare Devs Cancel Limping Mooncrest Kickstarter, Will Return Later

by Mike Futter on Aug 12, 2015 at 04:19 AM

Early this month, developer KnightMayor took to Kickstarter in hopes of bringing its first title to the masses. Mooncrest, a purported blend of Dark Souls combat and puzzle-solving, has received just over 10 percent of its goal in a week. The developers have decided to pull the plug for now.

One of the main criticisms is that KnightMayor offered no in-game footage. The developers recognize that hurt them and plan to address it before returning to Kickstarter.

“Coming out of the gate things looked great, but a weak project video, coupled with poor messaging, and no ingame footage was the death of us,” the studio says. “I planned on doing a full postmortem on our experiences with Kickstarter, but at this point we’ve examined and re-examined everything so many times I'd rather focus on the positive and move on.”

The team will revisit the project and plug the holes identified by potential backers. While this crowdfunding effort failed, we likely haven’t heard the last of Mooncrest.

“Our future plans are to lick our wounds, address all of the criticisms/complaints we received, and move forward with another Kickstarter once we’re ready,” KnightMayor says. “Our focus will be on having a pitch video that actually, ya know, pitches the game, having ingame footage to show, and just going more in depth on what we have in place to see this game through production and to release.”

Our Take
It was clearly the right decision to cancel early and learn from the mistakes made. Mooncrest sounds fascinating, but without proof of concept, it’s all just words. I look forward to seeing how KnightMayor adjusts for its eventual return to Kickstarter.
