[Update] Square Enix Calls Tomb Raider A 'Trilogy'

by Brian Shea on Aug 05, 2015 at 05:02 AM

Update: A representative from Square Enix has sent us a statement regarding future of Tomb Raider "trilogy," but it doesn't shed any light on the subject.

"We’re always thinking about the future of the franchise," it reads, "but right now we’re focused on the upcoming release of Rise of the Tomb Raider."

Original Story:

Rise of the Tomb Raider is the second title in the rebooted tale of Lara Croft, but it sounds as though it won't be the last. Phil Rogers, CEO of Square Enix Americas, referred to the series as "the Tomb Raider trilogy," signaling that there will be one more entry in this arc.

Speaking to GameSpot, Rogers talked about the timed Xbox exclusivity for Rise of the Tomb Raider, calling it, "the right thing to do with Tomb Raider right now." He continued, saying, "What it's done for the sake of the studio and the next beat with the Tomb Raider trilogy... But the backlash is--we've watched carefully and we believe it's the right thing to do."

We've reached out to Square Enix for comment on Rogers' quote and will update the story if we receive a response.

To learn more about Roger's thoughts on the timed exclusivity, head to GameSpot and check out interview. For more on Rise of the Tomb Raider, Lara Croft's upcoming adventure, you can head to our coverage hub.

Our Take
I don't know that anyone was guessing that Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics would stop their successful re-imagining of the Tomb Raider series after just two entries, but it's interesting that it seems as though the plans are currently set to include three titles. Of course, Rogers could have misspoke, but we'll have to wait and see if Square Enix clarifies his comments.
